Renewing Rivalry

With the leading German older horses Guignol (Ger) (Cape Cross {Ire}), Iquitos (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and Dschingis Secret (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) off duty, Sunday’s G1 Preis von Europa at Cologne could be open to the Classic generation. The two main 3-year-olds in attendance are Colomano (GB) (Cacique {Ire}) and Windstoss (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}) and they have already met on three occasions this year with the former coming out better on two of them. Aside from a disappointing effort when 13th in the G1 Deutsches Derby won by Windstoss at Hamburg on July 2, Colomano had that rival’s measure when they were first and second in the 11-furlong G2 Oppenheim-Union-Rennen here on June 11 and when they were third and fourth in the Sept. 3 G1 Grosser Preis von Baden.

If there is one older horse to make an impact it is surely last year’s G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up and G2 Grand Prix de Deauville winner Savoir Vivre (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}), who was last seen finishing fourth in the most recent edition of that prestige event on Aug. 27.
