ON THE FRINGE completed the Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown treble for the second consecutive year after yet another inspired ride from Nina Carberry sparking scenes of joy as punters threw their papers in the air in delight.

The Enda Bolger-trained 11-year-old travelled strongly throughout, jumping into the lead at the third-last fence with a superb leap.

Mendip Express looked like he was going to be the one to mount the challenge as he jumped the penultimate fence alongside Carberry’s mount but On The Fringe had too much left in the tank and he powered up the run in to record a famous success as the 4-5 favourite.

Emotional scenes

Tears were never far away for Bolger in a display of emotion as he remembered his good friend John Thomas McNamara, who rode On The Fringe to his first two victories in this contest in 2010 and 2012.

“He’s just a brilliant horse to have around,” said the trainer. “I’ll always think of John Thomas with this horse, he’s just very special to us.

“We knew he was bouncing at home. He and Nina have a great rapport and the way he jumps for her is just faultless. She’s my ally when it comes to these races. It’s just an amazing story.”

‘He just loves to jump’

Owner JP McManus said: “He is such a popular horse. Enda [Bolger] has done a superb job with the horse to keep him in such mint condition.

“He just loves to jump. If there were more fences he’d be an even happier horse.”

Paddy Power cut On The Fringe to 9-2 (from 5-1) for next year’s Foxhunter Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
