In this ongoing series, Alan Carasso takes a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. EARTH GENIUS (c, 2 Majesticperfection–Hairdo, by Millennium Wind), a $13K KEENOV weanling, improved to fetch final bid of $50K at last year’s FTKOCT sale and brought $100K after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 3/5 at this year’s FTFMAR sale. The May foal is out of a half-sister to MSW Ocean Bay (Groovy), the dam of Japanese SW Meine Isle (Candy Stripes). B-James David Squires (KY)

6th-NKY, ¥13,400,000 ($121k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200m
LOTUS QUEEN (f, 2, Blame–Bagatelle Park, by Speightstown) is the first foal from her stakes-placed dam and cost $70K as a KEENOV weanling before failing to reach her reserve when bidding stalled at $92K at KEESEP last fall. Consigned to this year’s BARMAR sale, she rolled through an eighth of a mile in :10 flat and was knocked down for $180K. EGRET (f, 2, Distorted Humor–Heavenly Romance {Jpn}, by Sunday Silence) is the most recent produce for this Tenno Sho-winning dam, but gets her start on dirt, a surface over which some of her siblings have excelled. Awardee (Jungle Pocket {Jpn}) won his first six starts once switched from the turf, including multiple G3s, and was placed twice in G1s on the main. Amour Briller (Smart Strike) won her dirt debut and has since become a MSW, while Lani (Tapit) won the G2 UAE Derby and was third in last year’s GI Belmont S. B-North Hills Co Ltd (KY)

8th-HSN, ¥14,250,000 ($129k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1200mT
Sheikh Mohammed’s OLD BAILEY (c, 3, To Honor and Serve–Passion Du Coeur, by Distorted Humor) got his career off on a winning note on the main track at Tokyo last November (video, post 16) and most recently made a favorable impression in his first start on the grass, finishing a close fourth at this venue in June (video, gate 11). The $220K FTSAUG yearling is a grandaughter of the fleet Arianna’s Passion (Unbridled’s Song), dam of MSW MGSP Distorted Passion (Distorted Humor) and granddam of Mrs McDougal (Medaglia d’Oro), a MGSW GISP on the grass.
