CHAMPION trainer Paul Nicholls, seeking his sixth Betfair Chase win this afternoon, is convinced Silviniaco Conti will improve from his seemingly disappointing fifth in the Charlie Hall Chase last time.
The eight-year-old, whose win in the Betfair Chase in 2012 followed four Kauto Star triumphs for Nicholls, was sent off the evens favourite at Wetherby, but could manage only fifth behind Menorah.
Nicholls, however, thinks a different horse will be seen at Haydock today, especially with the ground described as soft.
Silviniaco Conti heads the Betfair Chase betting at 7-2 from last year’s winner Cue Card (4-1), Dynaste (9-2) and Taquin Du Seuil (5-1). Charlie Hall winner Menorah, unlikely to appreciate testing conditions, is 11-1.
“Silviniaco has had a run and that won’t be lost on him today,” said Nicholls, speaking on The Morning Line. “It’s a different race and different ground, which will be to his liking.
“Soft ground on a track like this suits and he’s all about stamina. If it was good ground today I’d be very worried. Hopefully he’ll be sharper for that run at Wetherby.”
