Paul Nicholls: has big plans for novice chaser Frodon

THE newly-named BetVictor Gold Cup at Cheltenham is the audacious plan for four-year-old Frodon after a superb round of jumping on his third start over fences at Fontwell on Friday.

Trained by Paul Nicholls, Frodon, eighth in the Triumph Hurdle last season, was near-faultless over 16 fences in beating Clean Sheet by five lengths.

The Cheltenham handicap, known in recent times as the Paddy Power Gold Cup and this year staged on November 12,  has never been won by a four-year-old but that has not deterred Nicholls who won it with five-year-old Caid Du Berlais two years ago.

‘Neat as a cat’

Winning jockey Sam Twiston-Davies said: “Paul wanted to find out if he stays 2m 5f with the idea of going for the BetVictor. He took me to the front and jumped brilliantly and won nicely. He was neat as a cat and very quick.

“When he jumps like that I see no reason why he couldn’t see out a strongly run race like the BetVictor.

“That was his third run over fences, as he ran over them in France, so he’s eligible for the race. Hopefully it’s another good plan by the boss.”

Following Frodon’s latest win, he was cut to 16-1 (from 20)for the BetVictor Gold Cup by the sponsors.
