Newbury: prospects look bleak for tomorrow’s card

NEWBURY will inspect at 4pm for tomorrow’s key Classic trials after today’s fixture was abandoned due to waterlogging.

The prospect of the card, featuring the JLT Greenham Stakes and Dubai Duty Free Stakes, going ahead does not look good with more rain forecast.

Speaking after the track failed a 7am inspection for today’s meeting, clerk of the course Richard Osgood said: “We’ll look again for tomorrow this afternoon but if we get any more rain that will be the end of it and we’re forecast some heavy outbreaks so it doesn’t look good.”

The signs for today were ominous after a further 5.2mm of rain fell on heavy ground overnight.

“The course is waterlogged and there’s standing water in places,” added Osgood. “It has got worse all week and there’s no drying there at all. We tried to move the rail on to the outside of the hurdle course but that hasn’t worked either.”

Inspection at Stratford

Stratford is struggling with similar issues and officials have called a 7.30am inspection on Saturday for Sunday’s meeting.

Clerk of the course Nessie Lambert tweeted: “8mm overnight; further 12mm forecast. Going Heavy, Soft in Places. Inspection Saturday 7.30am.”
