WILLIE MULLINS breaks new ground in his continued fight for the trainers’ championship on Wednesday with two runners on the opening day of the Perth festival.

He runs Grade 2 winner Up For Review and Grade 2 second Nambour in a four-runner race for the £18,000 novice hurdle (3.15) as he seeks to close the gap on Paul Nicholls.

“Nambour is improving all the time,” Mullins said. “If he can improve another bit it will give him a fighting chance.

“Up For Review was disappointing at Cheltenham. All his winning form is on soft or heavy so we’ll have to see how he goes on better ground. He seems in good form.”

New course chief executive Hazel Peplinski is delighted to welcome Mullins’ horses and said: “Even though there are only four runners it is a strong race for Perth. Willie Mullins has added an extra dimension, it’s very exciting.

“He took note of the £220,000 of prize-money we have this week and we’re flattered. His horses were the first into our brand new stable yard last night, which is quite ironic as he’s never ever had runners here.”

Irish challenger

Gordon Elliott takes on the Mullins pair with Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle second Fagan and said: “He’s in good form having run a blinder at Cheltenham. On that form he has to have a very good chance.

“I’ve always loved coming over to Perth – my very first winner came there – and it’s great craic for the owners.”
