GARY MOORE has refused to abandon hope of stable star Sire De Grugy making the Cheltenham Festival in March despite a scan revealing that his stable star has a hip injury which means he will not run again in 2014.
Last season’s Queen Mother Champion Chase winner was forced to miss his intended comeback run in Cheltenham’s Shloer Chase on Sunday after being found to be lame behind following routine exercise last week.
Connections had been waiting on the outcome of a scan to discover the exact nature of his problem and Moore said a defence of the Betway-sponsored Grade 1would now be his target.
“There is no stress fracture of the tibia and his pelvis is fine as well but he has one hot area on a hip. I don’t know how he has done it but it’s probably through rolling in the sand paddock,” the trainer said.
“I’m hoping Cheltenham is not ruled out but he definitely won’t run again this year. The Champion Chase now has to be his target. I don’t think this will be season-ending. I don’t really know but I certainly hope not.”
Sire De Grugy can be backed at 4-1 for the Champion Chase, with Sprinter Sacre, winner of the race in 2013, the favourite at 5-2.
