Melham To Miss Everest Ride

Jockey Ben Melham will miss the ride aboard his G1 Golden Slipper She Will Reign (Aus) (Manhattan Rain {Aus}) in the A$10-million The Everest on Oct. 14 after conceding that he will not be able to make the weight of 51kg (112 pounds), according to Racenet.com.au. Melham had already given up the ride on the 3-year-old filly for her lead-up race, the Sept. 29 G1 Moir S., in which she will carry 50kg. Kerrin McEvoy is set to ride there.

“I’d been thinking quite hard about it and been training for six or seven weeks and dieting and stuff like that and I just felt 51 was just beyond me,” Melham told Racenet. “Fifty-two wouldn’t have been a problem but I just decided it was better to let them know now while they have got plenty of time. They have limited options with that kind of weight and I didn’t want to get close to the date and work out that it was going to be too light for me. At the end of the day, you can only do what the body will allow you.”
