Medaglia Colt Earns Group Win

Godolphin’s Astoria (Aus) (Medaglia d’Oro) bested the A$1.6-million Merovee (Aus) (Frankel {GB}) to earn a first black-type win in Friday’s G3 Spring S. at Newcastle. Traveling with just one behind on the heels of Merovee through the opening stages of the one-mile race, the $4.20 shot Astoria slipped back to last coming off the turn as the $2.50 favourite Merovee swung wide for running room. Astoria made up ground to draw even with Merovee shortly after straightening and had more to give than the Vinery colourbearer when it counted, hitting the line three-quarters of a length the best (video).

“The plan with him is 2000 [metres] and beyond,” Godolphin representative Nacim Dilmi told Sky Racing. “We took the blinkers off him today because last start he was a bit dour and it worked out. The [G1] Spring Champion S. is probably on the cards now.”

Astoria won on debut at Warwick Farm in March before finishing second to eventual G1 Champagne S. winner The Mission (Aus) in the G3 The Schweppervescence S. He was 11th in the G1 Sires’ Produce S. and was coming into this race off a first-up third in the G3 Ming Dynasty Quality S.
