Lingfield: Convey gives Stoute a first Winter Derby

Report: Lingfield, Saturday

Betway Winter Derby Stakes (Group 3) 1m2f, 4yo+

CONVEY gave Sir Michael Stoute a first win in the Winter Derby when coming with a late flourish under Andrea Atzeni to overcome the front-runner Pinzolo.

The success was also a first of the year for Stoute as the 11-2 chance scored on only his second start on the all-weather and first beyond 1m1f.

Although the face of the race changed with the morning absence of Mutakayyef, it was still a spectacle not least when 7-4 favourite Battalion blew the start.

He was always playing catch up behind Pinzolo who looked likely to win when kicking off the bend where he was flanked by Zhui Zeng and eventual third Absolute Blast.

Entering the final furlong it was anybody’s race until Convey and Atzeni came with a late surge. The winner was making his first start in new colours of Robert Ng having changed hands at the horses-in-training sales last October for 120,000 gns.
