Flogas Novice Chase (Grade 1) 2m5f60y
RSA Chase favourite Bellshill was a last fence faller when already beaten as Disko shook up the staying novice chase division with a game victory.
Bellshill, winner of both starts over fences, was under pressure back in fourth and making no headway when he came down as the winner, under an aggressive ride from Sean Flanagan, held off Our Duke to win by a length and three quarters.
Flanagan committed early on the Noel Meade-trained grey, one of three Gigginstown Stud runners, and his bold jumping helped turned round his third placing in the Grade 1 Neville House Novices Chase at Leopardstown at Christmas when beaten a length by Our Duke.
Trainer Noel Meade said: “When you see a horse jumping as good as that you get a great kick out of it. You are just counting the fences down and saying ‘That’s another good one and another good one’.
“I wasn’t sure whether that was the way to ride him. I just more or less left it to Sean. It made sense to make use of him. He was only beaten and half and a half the last day and that’s only one good jump.
He added on Attheraces, “He will travel to Cheltenham and go for probably the two mile five or the three mile, whichever we decide.”
Disko was cut to 8-1 from 16-1 by Paddy Power for the JLT Novices’ Chase while Bellshill was eased to 10-1 from 4-1 by Ladbrokes for the RSA.
