VANQUISH RUN held the fast-finishing Red Eldest to land the Japanese Derby trial for rider Hiroyuki Uchida and trainer Katsuhiko Sumii.

Settled in mid division, Uchida made his move with two furlongs to run and soon hit the front, though the outcome appeared in doubt inside the final 200 yards as the Hirofumi Shii-ridden Red Eldest started to finish with a flourish.

However, Vanquish Run ran on willingly for Uchida to win by a length and a quarter with favourite Laevateinn, partnered by Christophe Lemaire, three lengths back in third.

Uchida said: “I wanted to be near the front early on and he travelled well into the lead in the straight. I knew something would come home fast from the rear but he held on well.

“I thought he was a little  empty approaching the final furlong but he responded well to pressure. He was very gusty.”
