J Wonder (9): successful at Glorious Goodwood last week

J WONDER could be primed for a return to Group 1 company following a taking success in Friday’s Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood.

The Brian Meehan-trained three-year-old, who landed the Fred Darling at Newbury on her seasonal reappearance, proved too free when upped to a mile in the French 1,000 Guineas and suffered a similar fate when finishing seventh in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

However, the combination of a return to seven furlongs and an ease in grade allowed J Wonder to regain the winning thread last week, and Meehan has no concerns about going up in trip once more for another crack at the top table.

“I don’t see the return to a mile posing any problems,” the trainer said on Sunday. “So long as she settles she’ll be fine. I’m not sure about plans yet, maybe the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown.”
