Italian Yearling Sale Friday

Ninety-seven Italian-bred yearlings are set to sell at the Trotter Hyppodrome Maura in Milan, Italy, next to the San Siro Racecourse, on Friday at the SGA Yearling Sale. Buyers will be welcomed at the new facility by a new SGA board, including Dr. Giovanna Romano, former part owner of GI Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Red Rocks (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and he said, “We are very excited and cautiously optimistic,” said Romano. “The new ANAC Board was elected only middle of last May but has already accomplished a lot. First, we have the yearling sales with 97 yearlings by prominent European and Italian sires such as Sea the Stars, New Approach, Rock of Gibraltar, No Nay Never, Mujahid and Pounced. Then, the location change with a new, very functional and comfortable area within the brand new Maura Trotter Racetrack.”

Romano also revealed a new sales race will be staged next year for graduates of the SGA sale.

“We were also able to confirm that in 2018 we will offer a brand new race named Premio delle Aste with a purse between €70,000 and €100,000 restricted only to horses bought at our Sept. 15 SGA Sales,” he said. “In addition to that we will be able to offer a 2% commission to the agents and trainers buying at our sale and some refund of expenses to foreign buyers.”

In a boost to the Italian racing industry, the SGA has also revealed that the Italian government will add 60% bonuses to purses for Italian-breds racing in Italy, and €3.2-million has been recently added to Italian purses for the remainder of this year.

“Italian racing has an extremely rich tradition,” said Gianpiero Soccini, President of the SGA. “Starting with Federico Tesio, the creator of Nearco from whom Northern Dancer and all his European and American progeny, and we want to bring it back to the top starting with our new SGA Sales.” Click here for the catalogue.
