Gold-Fun: set to continue with a European campaign
GOLD-FUN, a recent runner-up to Twilight Son in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, will have his next outing in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville in August, trainer Richard Gibson has revealed.
Gibson – who has ruled out a crack at the July Cup beforehand – cited a lack of opportunities back in Hong Kong as a reason for the horse remaining in Europe.
Quoted in the South China Morning Post, the trainer said: “This horse always runs well fresh, so we were never going to run in the July Cup, but I know the French programme well and it [the Maurice de Gheest] is a very unique distance running 1,300m down a straight.
“After finishing off so strongly over 1,200m at Royal Ascot, I think that extra 100m will suit him.
“The feeling is that there aren’t many options in Hong Kong for him anymore, it’s a little sharp for him over 1,200m at Sha Tin, but the variations in Europe are well suited for him.”
The Prix Maurice de Gheest – run over the unusual distance of 6½f – is one of Europe’s premier sprints and has been won by some superstars in recent seasons, including the likes of Moonlight Cloud and Muhaarar.
While acknowledging the race’s standing, Gibson believes that Gold-Fun fully deserves his place in the line-up on the back of such a good effort at Royal Ascot.
“It’s a high quality race and the top European sprinters will be there without a doubt, but we have shown that we are up there with them,” the trainer added.
