THE Qatar Sussex Stakes has all the makings of a Glorious Goodwood highlight as it was confirmed on Monday that Galileo Gold, The Gurkha and Awtaad will once again do battle.

Each has won a 2,000 Guineas this season, with Galileo Gold successful at Newmarket, Awtaad winning the Irish equivalent and The Gurkha the French version.

The trio locked horns at Royal Ascot in the St James’s Palace, and it was Hugo Palmer’s Galileo Gold who triumphed, with Frankie Dettori getting first run on Ryan Moore aboard The Gurkha.

Confidence is high in the Palmer camp that Galileo Gold can confirm the Royal Ascot form. The trainer said: “His work has been good since Ascot, he’s got physically stronger and we know he handles the track because he won well there last year.

“It’s great for racing having these three leading milers taking each other on. I’ve always thought Galileo Gold has been slightly under-rated, even last year after he won the Vintage Stakes, but he’s got the form in the book now.”

Other rivals

Ribchester, another Royal Ascot winner, adds further spice to the Sussex Stakes mix with the Jersey Stakes victor lining up for Richard Fahey.

Godolphin also have Toormore engaged, with Gabrial, Kodi Bear, Lightning Spear, Richard Pankhurst and So Beloved completing the field of ten for the Group 1.

The betting is narrowly headed by Galileo Gold, who is a top price of 15-8 to secure a third Group 1 triumph of the season. The Gurkha is 2-1, while Awtaad can be backed at 7-1.

Other Wednesday declarations

Aidan O’Brien won the Group 3 Beringice Gordon Stakes last year with future King George winner Highland Reel, and this time has two contenders, Shogun and The Major General.

Sir Michael Stoute also has a pair of runners with Platitude and Ulysses, while Jim Bolger’s The Qatari Hunter bids for a four-timer.

Norfolk fifth Global Applause is set for the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes, with 12 juveniles declared.
