JOSEPHINE GORDON will compete in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup for the first time after she was called up as a replacement for the luckless Cathy Gannon.

Apprentice Gordon, who is having an outstanding year in the saddle, became a leading candidate to step in following the withdrawals of Michelle Payne and now Gannon from the original team. Sammy-Jo Bell, winner 12 months ago of the Alastair Haggis Silver Saddle, has also been sidelined by injury.

Organisers waited to see if Gannon, who missed last year’s event too because of injury, could return to full fitness from a foot injury in time for the August 6 fixture.

However on Monday she tweeted: “Not good news today another 6 to 8 weeks it’s out of my hands absolutely gutted.”

Gannon broke all five toes in her left foot in a stalls incident in May but had hoped to return in time.

Gannon happy for Gordon

She told the Racing Post: “I did everything in my power to try to get back for the Shergar Cup but it was a serious injury and if I go back too soon I could be out for nine months, which I don’t want.

“The injury is mending but it wasn’t one fracture it was five so I can’t put too much weight on it. It’s healing but it could take another six to eight weeks. I am hoping for September.

“I missed last year’s Shergar Cup through injury so this is pretty disappointing but I am happy for Josephine Gordon. It is great for her to get the opportunity to show her talent against world class jockeys.”

Gordon, who has ridden 43 winners in 2016, will join Emma-Jayne Wilson and Hayley Turner, two stalwarts of the event, in the girls team. Turner is coming out of retirement for the occasion.

Gordon tweeted her delight at the news she would ride at the meeting, though expressed her sorrow that Gannon was missing out. She said: “Over the moon to get the call for the Shergar Cup. But gutted for my good friend Cathy. Really hope u have a speedy recover.”

Joe Fanning will replace Jamie Spencer on the British and Irish team. Spencer, who was due to captain his side, was ruled out when he collected a three-day riding ban at Ascot on Friday.
