Goodwood: Pether’s polishes off his rivals

Report: Goodwood, Friday

Coutts Glorious Stakes (Group 3) 1m4f, 4yo+

IT never looked easy but ended up in a comfortable win.

Pether’s Moon looked headstrong in running, took a while to engage top gear, had to be woken up in the home straight, but then ran clear of his flagging rivals under Richard Hughes.

After four placed efforts in four runs this season the 11-10 favourite responded to Hughes’s urgings to give favourite backers a flying start to the penultimate day of Glorious Goodwood, leaving Encke trailing in second on his return from a steroids ban.

“He deserves to win a race,” said Hughes, extending his lead as the meeting’s top rider.

“I think we’ll have to put something on his head. He is not ungenuine, he is just lazy. You think you are going better than you are and you don’t find a whole lot but he finds enough to get there.

“He is a big, late maturing horse and Australia is written all over him, he is made for it.”

Encke travelled well for a long way on his first start since winning the 2012 St Leger.
