Chester: plenty of non-runners as rain arrives

AN UNEXPECTED mid-morning shower, delivering 2mm of rain, has eased the going at Chester to soft.
A dry day was forecast for Thursday, and after a dry night day two of the track’s May meeting was expected to take place on ground described as good to soft, soft in places after 4mm of rain on day one.
However, after what clerk of the course Andrew Morris described as an “unexpected shower” he was forced to make the going change.
Prior to the rain, Morris said: “We were dry overnight, we had 4mm of rain yesterday but have been dry since four o’clock onwards.”
The forecast suggests there is a threat of a further shower before turning to a dry afternoon.
Looking to day three on Friday, Morris added: “There is a band of rain coming from the south tomorrow, but it is debatable whether or not it will get to us in time but there is the possibility we get some rain tomorrow afternoon. Fingers crossed it arrives after racing.”
With the ease in the going responsible for seven of the 11 non-runners on Wednesday’s card, the clerk of the course voiced his frustration at the weather.
He said: “It is frustrating to have three great days racing and have the weather not be kind and not be with us. The non-runners are an inevitability due to the fact it has rained and they are no longer suited by the ground.”
Morris and his team have also moved the rails out by three yards between 6f and 1f. Distances have increased by: Race 1 – 1m2f89y (+14y), Race 2 – 1m2f89y (+14y), Race 3 – 1m4f86y (+20y), Race 4 – 7f135y (+13y), Race 5 – 5f26y (+10y), Race 6 – 6f31y (+13y), Race 7 – 1m2f89y (+14y).
