‘Gilt’-y As Charged

By Alan Carasso

Gilt Complex was given a positive ride by Harry Kasim and outstayed his more fancied rivals to cause a massive boilover in Sunday’s Raffles Cup at Kranji.

Outsprinted to the lead by the outposted Singapore Guineas winner Forever Young (Run Away and Hide), Gilt Complex was in third spot through the opening furlongs before easing forward to race closest to the pacesetter in the middle stages. Forever Young was clinging on best he could, but the distress signals were out and Gilt Complex overtook him at the 300m and kicked on gamely for the victory. Stablemate Elite Excalibur speared through late for second.

“I always thought he was more of a Gold Cup horse, and he is definitely a Gold Cup horse now,” said winning trainer Cliff Brown, referring to the 2200m Dester Singapore Gold Cup Nov. 12. Brown also saddled the sixth-placed favourite Debt Collector (NZ) (Thorn Park {Aus}). “I thought his barrier trial on Tuesday was very good. He appreciated the track today. Unfortunately, I think the other two felt the track.”

Gilt Complex, a bargain NZ$10,000 purchase at Karaka as a yearling, is easily the best produce for his dam, a winning half-sister to MSW GSP Camacho (NZ) (Maroof), G1SW Baldessarini (NZ) (Green Perfume) and SW Venezuela (NZ) (Success Express). The extended female family includes US champion juvenile Top Knight. Click for the Singapore Turf Club chart. VIDEO.
