Germany: Well Spoken gets better of Baden-Baden battle

Report: Germany, Sunday

Baden- Baden: Ittlingen Preis der Winterkönigin (Group 3) 1m, 2yo fillies

Well Spoken (Markus Klug/ Adrie de Vries) provided her trainer and rider with a second successive win in Germany’s top race for two-year-old fillies.

Well Spoken and Pemina had the race to themselves throughout the final furlong and a half, and it was Well Spoken who just got the better of a protracted battle by a head, before surviving a stewards’ inquiry.

Klug, who also won Friday’s big juvenile event and Saturday’s Italian St. Leger, said: “This weekend has made up for a lot of narrow defeats we have suffered this season.

“Well Spoken has class and is by no means a typical two-year-old. I regard her as a definite prospect for next year’s Preis der Diana (German Oaks).”

Also at Baden-Baden,

Baden-Württemberg-Trophy – Defi du Galop (Group 3), 1m2f, turf, 3yo+

Klug and de Vries also came close to taking Baden-Baden’s other big race, the Baden-Württemberg-Trophy, but their hope Devastar could not get to grips with 13-1 shot Palace Prince (Alexander Löwe/ Andreas Helfenbein), who went clear in the testing going to score by three lengths.

Star Victory and Shutterbug kept on for third and fourth.

It was a fitting result for veteran trainer Löwe, who will retire at the end of the season.
