A HOST of challengers from Britain, Ireland and Germany amassed in Paris chasing Group 1 glory, however it was the Andre Fabre-trained Waldgeist who showed a blistering turn of foot to soar clear from Godolphin’s Best Solution and the Aidan O’Brien-trained Capri.

Waldgeist was one of only two French-trained contenders in the 13-strong field but the son of Galileo flashed to the front under Pierre-Charles Boudot, defeating Autumn Stakes winner Best Solution, who looked like he would not be caught after Christophe Soumillon stole a march entering the final furlong.

Capri, installed as second favourite for the Derby after winning the Beresford Stakes last month, looked laboured in the closing stages, failing to make any inroads on a comfortable winner, who stepped up on his half-length third behind Frankuus in the Prix de Conde last time out.

The Derby picture looks no clearer in the aftermath of the race, with Capri eased to 20-1 (from 14s) for the Epsom Classic and Best Solution installed as a 25-1 shot with Paddy Power. Waldgeist entered the market as a 16-1 shot with Coral.
