Deauville: Darley Prix Jean Romanet (Group 1) 1m2f f/m 4yo+

RIBBONS took a big step up in grade in her stride with storming turn of foot to give Frankie Dettori a quick Group 1 double as British-trained runners dominated the finish.

Second went to Princess Loulou for Roger Varian with Secret Gesture claiming third for Ralph Beckett.

Second in a mile fillies handicap at Ascot last time off a mark of 95, Ribbons had twice been placed in Listed company, but never tackled a higher grade, and was sent off an 11-1 shot.

But the four-year-old, owned by Elite Racing Club  who have enjoyed previous Group 1 success with Fanshawe through Soviet Song, came with a withering run in the straight under Dettori for a comprehensive two-length success.

Last year’s Oaks runner-up Secret Gesture tracked Euphrasia for the majority of the race, with Jamie Spencer angling the filly out into the centre of the track away from the worst of the ground when turning in.

Euphrasia stuck to the rail but was overhauled by Princess Loulou who ran a screamer at 20-1 to grab second. Like Secret Gesture, Ribbons came down the centre, and rocketed through the pack for victory. Spencer held on to third aboard Secret Gesture at 9-2.

Winning trainer Fanshawe said: “Afterwards it’s very easy to say we were always confident. At home she’s always looked a very good filly. Her aunt is Soviet Song and like her she puts her head down.

“This one is late maturing. I’ve been tearing myself apart all weekend – was it the right decision? But it was for four-year-olds and upwards, fillies and mares and she had her ground. Plus it’s a Group 1.”
