Auteuil: Prix Renaud du Vivier (Group 1 hurdle) 2m3½f, 4yo
HIPPOMENE (Jean-Paul Gallorini/David Cottin) upset stablemate Roll On Has and the form book to stride away with France’s autumn championship for four-year-olds, in which the Paul Nicholls-trained Art Mauresque was pulled up.
As early pacesetter Polygona gave way at the top of the straight, Vincent Cheminaud looked to have most of his rivals covered on Roll On Has, the winner of the Prix Alain du Breil in June.
But Cottin was sitting motionless aboard Hippomene – who had already showed that autumn is his season when scoring at Group 1 level a year ago under Flat champion jockey Christophe Soumillon – and the pair surged clear of Roll On Has to score by six lengths.
Asked to explain the turnaround in form between his two charges, Gallorini said: “Hippomene has a penchant for champion jockeys. The only other time he beat Roll On Has was when he was ridden by another Cravache d’Or, Christophe Soumillon.
“Roll On Has has done okay, but I think Vincent might have got involved with the fight for the lead a little bit too early.”
Nicholls was unable to repeat his Group 1 success with Zarkandar a week ago, as Art Mauresque was pulled up three out by Sam Twiston-Davies.
“We were travelling really well and he just went out like a light,” said Twiston-Davies. “There must be some reason for it and he is being checked out.”
