QUEEN’S JEWEL (Freddy Head) stretched her unbeaten record to three with a victory that owed as much to the exceptional talents of her jockey Maxime Guyon as it did to her superior athletic ability.
Settled in midfield Queen’s Jewel was reluctant to race early and niggled throughout, with Guyon never looking happy on the 8-13 favourite as he teased and cajoled her into the contest.
It was not until the false straight, by which point Guyon had her on the heels of the leaders, that she snapped onto the bridle. The pair rounded the home bend five wide but as soon as they straightened up Queen’s Jewel shot clear of her eight rivals to come home three lengths clear of 20-1 shot Wekeela, with Olorda, an 11-2 chance, a further six lengths back in third.
Guyon said: “It all went very easily. She was a little bit caught out for speed at one stage but the clock speaks volumes because we broke the race record. She accelerated right away in the straight and she won easily.”
