Four Day Ban For Russell

By Daithi Harvey

The sorry saga surrounding jockey Davy Russell, the Irish Turf Club and Russell’s punch to the neck of King’s Dolly (Ire) (Golan {Ire}) before the start of a hurdle race in Tramore Aug. 18 has hopefully run its course following the jockey’s visit to Turf Club head quarters at The Curragh on Tuesday. Russell received a belated four-day ban for the incident after the case was re-opened for review following the decision by the Turf Club referrals committee to issue just a caution to Russell over the incident, a decision which lead to further condemnation on social media, not only of Russell’s actions but also over the leniency shown by the Turf Club. Russell’s suspension begins Sept. 19 which leaves him free to ride in the seven day long Listowel Festival which kicks off this Sunday.
