The 2017 renewal of the G1 Moyglare Stud S. marked another red-letter day for the Storm Cat mare You’resothrilling. The race’s winner, Happily (Ire), was the mare’s third Group 1 winner and her fifth Group 1 performer, following G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Marvellous (Ire), dual Guineas winner Gleneagles (Ire), GI Belmont Oaks third Coolmore (Ire), and Secretariat runner-up Taj Mahal (Ire), all by Galileo (Ire). Winner of the G2 Cherry Hinton S. at two and rated 117 by Timeform, You’resothrilling was clearly the second-best foal out of Mariah’s Storm, following the great Giant’s Causeway, like You’resothrilling sired by Storm Cat. Happily’s success puts her dam among the very best matrons in the world of Thoroughbred breeding. There have only been 10 mares in the Northern Hemisphere foaled since the pattern began that have produced five or more Group 1 performers in their lifetime. The three leaders, locked on seven Group 1 performers apiece, are Hasili (GB), Urban Sea and Fall Aspen. Hasili’s seven Group 1 horses from only 10 runners feature an unbroken run of five Group 1 winners–Banks Hill (GB), Heat Haze (GB), Intercontinental (GB), Cacique (Ire) and Champs Elysees (GB). And Dansili (GB)’s fast finish in the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Mile could easily have made it six consecutive Group 1 winners. Urban Sea’s seven include Galileo and Sea The Stars (Ire), while Fall Aspen can claim Group 1 winners Northern Aspen, Hamas, Fort Wood and Timber Country among hers. What’s especially exciting about You’resothrilling’s achievements is that every one of her first five foals is a Group 1 performer. Only Hasili among the very best listed on our table has matched that particular feat.
