Dubawi’s Ghaiyyath Powers To Autumn Success

By Sean Cronin

Ghaiyyath hit the board tackling one mile in his Sept. 15 debut at Doncaster and sported a first-time hood when plundering a Sept. 28 course-and-distance maiden in his only other start last time. The bay was fitted with headgear once more for this black-type bow and provided Charlie Appleby with a first renewal of this contest won by Nashwan, Nayef, Presenting and, more recently, subsequent G1 St Leger hero Kingston Hill (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) in 2013. Settled under cover in a handy fourth after the initial exchanges, he was stoked up to close with three furlongs remaining and kept on resolutely under a drive once gaining a narrow advantage at the eighth pole to prevail in ultimately dominant fashion. “He bunny hopped out of the stalls for a stride and I wanted to be closer, but they went a good gallop and he travelled sweetly throughout,” explained rider William Buick. “He had to be courageous to squeeze through a gap going into ‘the dip’ and, when we levelled out, he picked up really well and won like a nice horse. He gave me a good feel and is going to better next year.”
Ghaiyyath is the second stakes scorer for G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Nightime (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a daughter of stakes-winning Irish highweight Caumshinaun (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), and is kin to GI Man o’ War S.-winning European highweight Zhukova (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and Listed Salsabil S. third Sleeping Beauty (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who in turn produced GIII With Anticipation S. runner-up Irish Territory (Ire) (Declaration of War). He is also half to a yearling filly by Zoffany (Ire).
