IT SEEMS the Closutton conveyor belt of stars is never ending. As if there hasn’t been enough talent on show from the Willie Mullins outfit so far this term, it looks like we have another thunderbolt to salivate over following Kalkir’s awesome performance in the Grade 3 juvenile hurdle at Fairyhouse.
The 9-10 favourite was a brilliant winner of the opener, scoring by eight lengths from Dai Bondo, and bookmakers now go as short as 5-1 about the Montmartre gelding for the Triumph Hurdle.
Another star in the colours of Rich and Susannah Ricci, Kalkir impressed his rider Ruby Walsh, who said: “It is early days but he has put a marker down. He seems a nice horse going the right way.”
Mullins added: “He’s a good jumper. He’d been doing nice work at home without setting the gallop on fire so it’s nice to see what he can do on the racetrack. I imagine his next run will be at Leopardstown at Christmas.”
