Ascot: Spencer too good on classy Speculative Bid

Report: Ascot, Saturday

Totescoop6 Victoria Cup (Heritage Handicap) 4yo+, 7f

TWO furlongs from home Jamie Spencer was dead last on Speculative Bid but by the time he passed the furlong pole he was in the lead and heading clear for a brilliant victory.

The David Elsworth-trained winner deserves plenty of credit too because it made up the ground with elegant ease and went readily away from the field once in front.

Lincoln came from deep with a punishing run that almost caught the leader but had to settle for second, while Hawkeyethenoo, veteran of dozens of big-field handicaps and winner of this race in 2011, ran a blinder to finish third. Buckstay completed the places in fourth.

Spencer said: “He’s a joy to ride and I’m sure there’s more improvement in him. We’ll see where that takes him.”
