A Century of Stakes Winners for Deep Impact

By Alan Carasso

Making his first appearance since annexing an 1800-metre newcomers’ event at Hanshin June 25 (video, gate 7), Danon Premium easily negotiated the hike into stakes company to give his sire a 100th career black-type winner while establishing a new track record.

Smoothly into stride from gate two, the second wagering favorite was rated along nicely from second by Yuga Kawada and was held together into the long Fuchu straight. Given his head with a little more than a furlong to travel, he surged to the lead, opened a daylight advantage and was always holding favoured Stelvio in the run to the wire, then galloped out with gusto.

Danon Premium could be on course to contest the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity, a race won by this owner’s Danon Platina (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) en route to being named Japan’s champion 2-year-old male of 2014.

Danon Premium is a son of MSW MGSP Indiana Gal and is one of three winners from four to race from the mare, who was purchased by K I Farm for 160,000gns out of the 2010 Tattersalls December mares sale. The dam of a yearling filly by Orfevre (Jpn), Indiana Gal most recently foaled a K I Farm’s superstar sprinter and successful first-crop sire Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}).
